Our story - it's a good one

We might only have a few chapters under our belt, but we’ve done a lot in that short time. Are you ready to leap into our world? We promise we have a good story to tell you.

It all started in 2017

January. 2017. A team of passionate students from Enactus QUT band together with a mission to make a difference in the lives of Indigenous youth. And boy, what a journey they had ahead of them.

Chapter one: big goals, an exciting beginning

The mission

Our mission is simple: create change. Everyone has the right to literacy and education, and our goal was to create a project that would work to make this a reality for Indigenous youth in rural Australia.

Close the gap

Work with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to raise money to support their mission to bring education and literacy to rural Indigenous communities.

Celebrate Indigenous art

Create a product that celebrates the incredible story telling, knowledge, traditions, and beliefs preserved in Indigenous art.

Create pride

Instil a sense of pride in and understanding of the diverse and culturally rich country that we have the privilege to live in.

Chapter two: a fashion label with a difference

We started with socks

Socks are our passion, and it’s where this story begins. We worked with local Indigenous artists to create a sustainable fashion label that wears its mission on its sleeves – equality for Indigenous youth.

From the very beginning, we knew that didn’t want to just sell socks – we wanted to sell a story. A story of Australia’s unique and diverse cultural history. A story of the Indigenous literacy gap, and a community of youth in rural Australia fighting for equality and their right to education. A story of the future we are fighting for, bright with change and opportunities for everyone.

Best Foot Foward’s first iteration of their schmick socks was The Original Sock (I know, we were still working on the naming thing). Designed by local Indigenous artist Jo Stuurman, the artwork told the dreamtime story of a red desert sea.

Our limited edition Purple Socks soon became a staple of Best Foot Forward. We fell in love with Maurice Woodley’s artwork, which soon became the perfect way to put your best foot forward and showcase the unique beauty of of Indigenous art.

The incredible “This Land of Ours” design for our scarves and pocket squares was created by Luke Mallie. He pulled upon his rich traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, his family, and his tropical surroundings to craft a unique artwork that is rich with colour and history.

Each pocket square is a one-of-a-kind, featuring a unique cut of the whole artwork.

Our scarves showcased Luke Mallie’s artwork in its entirety. Made from premium silk, the product was a crowd favourite.

Chapter three: creating organisational change

Gifting with a purpose

The Australian corporate sector plays a huge role in delivering strategies that create ‘shared value’. Shared value isn’t social responsibility or philanthropy but a new way to achieve economic success. It’s not on the margin of what organisations do but at the centre.

We decided to make it easier for businesses to create shared value and realise their Reconciliation Action Plans through meaningful corporate gifting. We’ve worked with organisations to create measurable actions that support equality and ensure Indigenous children have the same life opportunities as other children.

Chapter four: we are the champions

2018 Enactus World Cup

After winning the 2018 Enactus Australia Nationals, Best Foot Forward was a part of the lucky team that got to represent Australia in the World Cup in San Jose.

Dedicated to businesses as a force of good, Best Foot Forward found themselves surrounded by the world’s next up-and-coming purpose driven leaders. The Enactus World Cup is a showcase of sustainable, social innovation that brings together individuals with a shared vision of creating businesses that transform lives and create a better future.

Our team had the pleasure of presenting Best Foot Forward in front of an international audience, packed with the best-of-the-best up and coming social enterprises – an entire convention of people dedicated to making a difference.

Chapter five: At it again with Enactus

2019 Enactus National Conference and Competition

Three days. Thirteen universities. Lead by QUT’s Faculty Advisory, Jess Kelly, a team of students travelled down to Sydney to represent Best Foot Forward in the 2019 Enactus National Conference and Competition.

For the fifth time in a row, Enactus QUT made it to the finals, this time with Best Foot Forward at its helm. It was official – Best Foot Forward was a National Enactus finalist.

Chapter six: 2020 and beyond

What's next? Everything...

Our story might have only just begun, but we’re writing new chapters every day. From empowering Indigenous youth, to supporting local Indigenous artists, to enacting organisational change through meaningful corporate gifting, we’re working harder than ever to achieve our goal.

Big things are coming – are you ready to be part of the change?
